Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a major cause of respiratory illness in adults, particularly older individuals and those with chronic diseases such as heart failure, COPD, asthma, CKD, diabetes, and immunocompromised states.
Globally, RSV causes >30 million infections annually, and adult hospitalisations continue to rise. RSV causes ~6 million adult hospitalisations and ~100,000 deaths yearly. Seasonal peaks vary by geography, often occurring in winter or rainy seasons.
In Malaysia, reports in 2024 suggest:
• RSV is significantly under-recognised in older adults.
• The elderly bear the largest disease burden.
• RSV contributes to pneumonia and hospitalisation, especially during seasonal peaks.
These findings emphasise the growing clinical importance of RSV among ageing Malaysians.
